Smithers, BC

We woke up refreshed, and headed over to the gift shop to pick up some souvenirs, then continued our journey south towards Smithers, BC.

It rained pretty much all day, which made the drive feel very foreboding and occasionally a little treacherous as we would round a corner and find no barrier to prevent a slip and plunge over the side. There’s a very good reason that this road is closed during the winter. On the plus side, it kept the windshield free of bugs.

And when we rounded a corner to see three different warning signs (“Avalanche Area”, “Falling Rocks”, “Mud Slides)”, less than 100 yards apart, we were more than ready to move past that area as quickly as we could…

We also didn’t take very many photographs today, partly due to the rain and partly because after three days, all the beautiful mountains and scenery start to look the same. That’s not to say the scenery is no longer impressive, because it is – it’s just that that’s all we’ve seen for three days now. That said, here’s a selfie, taken somewhere around here.

We stopped for gas and snacks at the Kluachon Store in Iskut, where we loaded up on various different brands of “All Dressed” flavor chips. All I’m going to say, is that these things really need to be available inthe US.

The Sandman Inn in Smithers was decent enough, although there was some momentary confusion as to whether I had booked a pet-friendly room or not, the clerk allowed us to stay in a regular room with the dogs, since he had no spare rooms available to move us to. It didn’t matter to us – we just wanted somewhere to sleep. Smithers itself is a decent-sized town, and while it was nice to finally have cell phone service and all the other amenities that come with city life, we felt as though the grandest part of our adventure was over now.

We ordered some vegan curries from the Tandoori Bistro restaurant next door, walked over with the dogs to pick them up, took the food back to the room and settled in for the night.

We have still not heard anything on the CB radio. At this point we are wondering whether it even works.
