Onward, to Canada

Onward, to Canada

Woke up at 6:45 after a fitful night’s sleep, because apparently the dogs don’t like to sleep on the floor. They much prefer to jump on the bed and take as much of it as they can. It’s fine though, because today is the first day of driving, so we’re both excited to get going. Really, Scott is super-excited – he’s just hiding it well…

We hit the road around 7:30, drove through Blondies Espresso for a coffee and set out for Kluane RV Park and Inn, 593miles and eleven hours away in Canada.

The first hour or so of the drive was fairly easy, with some fast roads and some nice views. We drove past Matanuska Glacier and took a few photos out of the window as we flew by.

We filled up with gas and switched drivers at Tok about halfway through the drive and about 70 miles from the Canadian border. Tito pooped on some grass in front of the gas station and it was at this point we realized we’d forgotten to buy cleanup bags. Oops….

The road from Tok to the Canadian border was not so great. Large sections of it were just gravel, with no markings at all. There were also several spots where the road was being worked on and we had to wait several minutes to be allowed through. And there was dust everywhere. The poor Bronco looked like it had spent half it’s life inside a salt shaker.

We followed Doc Emmet Brown for a few miles, but since his time machine didn’t look like it was ever going to hit 88mph, we passed him and sped onwards to Canada.

We stopped at the Canadian border and took some photos, one foot in each country, as is tradition. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get any pictures of us together as there wasn’t anyone else around to take it for us and we’re not cool enough to have a selfie stick. The interesting thing about the border is that the customs office is located about 5 miles inside Canada and not on the actual border, so we thought we could just drive on in – until we couldn’t.

But it was an uneventful stop anyway – show the passports and the dogs medical records and answer a couple of questions on our reasons for travelling to Canada, and we’re in and on our way to Kaines Junction for a nice cold beer.

Eleven hours after setting off, we finally arrived at the Kluane RV Park and Inn. It had a nice little bar with a pool table and a Chinese restaurant attached, so it looked like we were set for evening.

Except of course, we couldn’t leave the dogs alone in the room, because as soon as we closed the door, they started barking and freaking out. So instead of a nice meal, a cold beer and a few rounds of pool, we heated some water in the microwave and warmed up a couple of dehydrated dinners. I did grab a couple of cans of beer from the bar and Scott had a couple of cans of Truly that we forgot to mention at the Canadian border, so it was all good in the end.

With the exception of some random static, the CB radio remained silent the entire day, across all 40 channels.
